Rep. Martin Heinrich: I Plan to Actively Consider Running for U.S. Senate in NM

MartinHeinrich Rep. Martin Heinrich (D, NM-01) just released the following statement about his plans to actively consider running for the U.S. Senate seat that is being vacated by Sen. Jeff Bingaman in 2012:

"Since the announcement Friday by my friend and mentor, Senator Jeff Bingaman, that he would not seek a sixth term in the U.S. Senate, many constituents and friends across New Mexico have asked if I will run for his seat. I have not yet made a decision, but together with my wife Julie, I plan to actively consider running. Jeff Bingaman and I share a passionate concern for this great state and its people, and my decision will be based on whether I believe I can best serve New Mexico in the House or in the Senate."

I think Rep. Heinrich would make a top notch Senator but can we hold his House seat if he leaves? That is the million dollar question. Good candidates?

Can Martin Heinrich have statewide appeal? This category also applies to Ben Ray Lujan and Diane Denish. Is he/they electable beyond Bernallio County? Nothing against liberalism but the state of NM is more center than not. The latest race for NM Governor showcases that.

IMHO the Dems should nominate a safe surefire winnable candidate such as Bill Richardson, Marty Chavez, or an up and coming Hispanic populist such as Hector Balderas.

I question Marty or Bill being "winnable". the City of Albuquerque had Marty fatique awhile back, and he has not had statewide appeal, partly because of resentment about big ALbuquerque vs. small rural towns. And Bill Richardson has way too much baggage now. Give me Martin, Hector, or Ben Ray.

Denish ran a a liberal? I don't think so. She fell all over herself trying to prove she had no opinions that might "upset" the people in Hobbs. The result was that she lost both Hobbs and Bernalillo County. We need a strong fighter for the people not some mealy mouth.

Bill Richardson and Marty Chavez are the past and so is Diane Denish. We need to move towards the future with Heinrich, Ben Ray Lujan or Hector Balderas.

Why did Heinrich just recently vote to keep the Patriot Act going?

Martin Heinrich. The Koch brothers will run a Hispanic against you. Keep your seat.

So now we're supposed to conduct our elections in a way to avoid Koch brothers criticism and creepy name calling? Good luck on that one. No matter what we do they will pull the same tricks and lie about it if they have to. You would think by now Dems would have learned this lesson. We need to confront the Koch brothers not appease them.

I'm tired of being urged to support this candidate or that because of a last name. Let's support the best candidate for the job and urge them to go after the Koch brother propaganda with all their might.

I'm tired of Democrats being non-strategic and getting their butts handed to them. Heinrich's position is not safe if he resigns.

Huge leap between State Auditor and Senate. Rep. Heinrich is much more experienced.
