Tomorrow, Rep. Ben Ray Luján (NM-03) will celebrate Earth Day by joining Speaker Pelosi and a bipartisan group of Members at a reception to highlight efforts to increase energy efficiency, improve green practices and decrease the carbon footprint of the House of Representatives under the “Green the Capitol” initiative. The Members will discuss the success of the “Green the Capitol” initiative tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 at 1:00 pm (EST) at the Rayburn House Office Building foyer in Washington.

“Congress has taken the lead on Green initiatives through its Green the Capitol program,” said Rep. Luján in a statement released today. “Efforts to improve energy efficiency have significantly reduced the Capitol’s carbon footprint. I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue and grow this important program.”

Speaker Pelosi implemented the “Green the Capitol” initiative at the beginning of the 110th Congress. Since the program began, the Capitol’s carbon footprint has been reduced by a whopping 74 percent. The office of the Chief Administrative Officer has led the program.

Rep. Luján has been busy advocating for energy efficiency programs. Last week, he joined Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity, YouthWorks, Santa Fe Community College, Oshara Village, and Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association to break ground for an affordable, energy efficient home. Rep. Luján is a member of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science and Technology.
