Rep. Harry Teague Announces Decision to Vote Against House Health Care Reform Bill

HteagueCR Congressman Harry Teague (NM-02) released a statement yesterday afternoon explaining that he will be voting against H.R. 3962, the House health insurance reform bill and laying out the reasons for his decision. Rep. Teague said:

“Let me be clear, I believe we need to reform our health care system. I personally know how not having health insurance can impact individuals and families. Growing up, both my parents worked, but we still couldn’t afford health insurance. So when my parents got sick, I had to drop out of high school and go to work to help support our family. Those were difficult times and why as a small business owner I worked hard to provide affordable health insurance options to my employees and their families.

"I had hoped to have an opportunity to vote for a health insurance reform bill that would guarantee every American access to affordable, quality health care, and rein in the skyrocketing health care costs that are keeping people and businesses out of the system and driving up our national debt. Unfortunately, the current bill before Congress falls short of that and I am left with no choice but to vote against it.

"This bill doesn’t do enough to rein in insurance companies. It mandates millions of people and businesses to buy health insurance, but does little to make insurance companies control consumer costs. I am also concerned that American taxpayers will end up footing a nearly $900 billion tab for a bill that doesn’t do enough to ‘bend the cost curve’ in a way that permanently reduces both costs and the national debt.

"I came to Washington with personal experience of how a health care crisis can impact a family and with a commitment to getting this kind of misguided spending under control. Health insurance reform is too important to settle for a bill that appears to be a temporary fix that guarantees more money for insurance companies and a bigger national debt, but in the end doesn’t lower the cost of health care for New Mexico families and businesses. I intend to continue pushing for reform that lowers the cost of health insurance for families and businesses in a fiscally responsible way.”

After working late into the night yesterday -- primarily on trying to iron out disagreements on coverage for abortion and whether undocumented workers would be allowed to purchase coverage -- the U.S. House is currently involved in what's expected to be a day-long debate on the bill, with a floor vote to come as early as this evening. President Obama and several aides will visit Capitol Hill this morning to personally shore up votes. Not a single Republican is expected to vote in favor of the bill.

New Mexico's two other House members, Rep. Martin Heinrich (NM-01) and Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, have both said they'll be voting in favor of the bill. Other Democratic House members who said yesterday they would vote no on the health reform bill include Collin Peterson (D-MN), John Tanner (D-TN)., Bobby Bright (D-AL), Walter Minnick, D-Idaho, Suzanne Kosmas (D-FL), Travis Childers (D-MS), Parker Griffith (D-AL) and Frank Kratovil (D-MD). Speaker Nancy Pelosi can afford to lose only 40 Dem votes if the almost 2,000-page bill is to pass.

Teague is making a huge mistake. His vote will drive off all the progressives and Obama fans who gave him his victory last time. He's crazy if he thinks voting no will gain him any Republican votes. I can't believe this.

Bye bye Harry. Trying to appease the rightwing nuts will only make you the punching bag of Dem votes you need to win. You make me very sad.

Congressman Teague's cowardice and betrayal is astounding. Even more infuriating is his phony excuse for caving to the right wing of the 2nd CD. Last week he was "concerned" about a public option; this week he worries the bill doesn't go far enough at reform. I for one will not vote for Mr. Teague as he is not representative of either his district generally, or the Democratic electorate who sent him to Washington, specifically. He is a disgrace!

So, Teague won't vote for the bill because it's not good enough?!? Baloney. Harry, you won your seat by appealing to new, young, progressive voters, but you are in grave danger of becoming Creigh Deeds, whose name now I had to work to recall. Run away from your party and your president, and you will lose big. Even in your district, Republican lite won't work.

You've done a good job so far, but this could be the pivotal vote of your whole career. Don't throw your seat away to appease the reichving! CHANGE YOUR MIND, Congressman, and vote for health care reform! Otherwise we won't be calling you "Congressman" for long.

I feel that it is my duty to remind ya'll that Rep. Teague's opponent is Steve Pearce. So you really want THAT back?
I am disappointed with Teague's vote but at least he didn't put up some lame right wing excuse. While he should vote for the reform, he is right about the bill.

I agree with gofdisks and with Congressman Teague. The bill will make the insurance companies much more powerful and richer while the benefit to the general public will not be noticable. It does have good points, but the costs outweigh the benefits.

I think that Congressman Teague may be taking the courageous position. We need a single payer system and it must be simple. What we are looking at right now is neither a single payer system nor is it simple. We also should not allow ourselves to allow Congress to take our best option, Single-Payer, off the table. That is what will help us, not anything else.

I am going to go back to supporting the Health Security Act for New Mexico. It will work, it will save us money and we can pass it. We need your help!

Terry Riley

Single payer is a pipe dream. We need this bill now. It will play out like social security which only covered very few when it began. We need something to start the process and this bill is it.

If this bill does not pass you can expect a Republican Congress in 2010 and a Republican President in 2012. Is that what you want Terry Riley? How stupid.

Harry Teague has abandoned the people who elected him. He will not be reelected regardless. We expect to get the Obama agenda the majority voted for. Democrats need to get on board-why is it so easy for republicans to ok anything and democrats find it so difficult to pass the agenda chosen by the majority of voters.

Right on, Harry!

If this is the best the Dems can come up with, and it's to be seen if this isn't but a bailout for insurance companies if their costs aren't contained, then I fear this contentious issue won't be revisited for a good long while. . .
Have we passed up the opportunity for single-payer for good?

If third-party candidates were easily allowed to access ballot access in this state, indeed in this nation, then the competition would indeed help keep major party candidates in line to vote as they campaigned out of fear they might not get that re-election vote if they renege . . .

How many of you will really remember his decision and not vote for Teague, or any other Dem, if they are the only choice you've got on the ballot?
Is that really choice?

So who will emerge to run against Harry in the primary? There's an old Texas saying and I'm sure it's in Tennessee too....
Even more deplorable than the HCR bill vote was the anti-abortion cultists' amendment! Totally inexcusable.

The little Texas rednecks didn't vote for him, wouldn't vote for him regardless of the vote and will never vote for him.

Thank you , Mr. Teague. thinking for yourself and I am proud of you. I am not in your district and right now wish I was. Keep up the good work.

Um Dorothy, IMO, Mr Teague was NOT thinking FOR himself, he was thinking OF himself. His vote against HCR and for the Stupak Amendment shouts, I am voting to appease the conservatives in my district for MY re-election.
