(Updated, We Win Again!) Live Blogging from NM Impeachment Hearing

UPDATE: As reported in the comments section by LInda in the hearing room, the NM Senate Judiciary Committee passed the impeachment resolution this evening! The measure passed by a margin of 5-1 along party lines with one Democrat, Sen. Lidio Rainaldi (D-Gallup), not voting and only one Republican, Sen. Rod Adair (R-Roswell), present and voting no. Voting yes were Senators Cisco McSorley (D-Albuquerque), Richard Martinez (D-Espanola), John Grubesic (D-Santa Fe), Linda Lopez (D-Albuquerque), and Michael Sanchez (D-Belen). Big thank you to all who voted for passage! Next the resolution will go to the Senate floor for a vote by all the State Senators. Another victory for truth and justice -- the third Senate Committee to pass the resolution. Thanks to all who are working so hard on this!

Linda is at the Senate Judiciary Hearing of SJR 5, the NM resolution requesting that the U.S. House investigate Bush and Cheney to determine if impeachment is merited, this afternoon in Santa Fe. She's been entering her comments under the previous thread so I thought I'd put them together here under a thread about the hearing. Click on comments and read what Linda has to say and/or type in your own comments. You can read our previous posts on this issue in our impeachment post archive.

By the way, here's a recent article in The Nation by Elizabeth Holtzman, who testifed via video at today's NM Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. She was involved in the Nixon impeachment. She lays out the reasons we need to do this in a clear and convincing way. The momentum builds.

Here are Linda's first few comments, copied from the previous thread:

Hello folks, sitting here in Room 321 in the StateHouse waiting for the Judiciary Committee members to arrive. They are currently still debating on the floor, but the good news is that all 6 are here today, so we have a strong majority.

We are behind aproximately 10 Bills, so I suspect another long day.

Will keep you posted as I can.

It looks like things may be getting started. The Senators are seated and the wonderful Senator Ortiz y Pino has been here, ready to hear and address the Committee.

I think SJ5 may be the next Bill up for discussion as Senator Ortiz y Pino has come back in to the room.

At least we are hoping so. :)

The room is still full!

Our bill is UP!

Senator Ortiz y Pino is now addressing the Committee.

He is opening with discussion of his video Conference with Former Congresswoman Hollzman with her expertise in the matters of impeachment.

They are getting ready to show a few moments of the interview. As he covers some of her answers.

I'd love to see that video. I hear it's very persuasive.

They are now going to the proponents for the this Resolution.

The People will now get to speak in support of this resolution. Each person speaking will be given 2 minutes max.

They are preparing for an hour of discussion.

Is the hearing room full with more people in the hall again?

Posted by: barb | Mar 5, 2007 7:12:32 PM

Franster just spoke eloquently. She brought tears to my eyes.

We have a great group of people here representing the American people.

Posted by: Linda | Mar 5, 2007 7:17:51 PM

Barb,

No, we don't seem to have any waiting in the hall, but the roomis full.

I wish I could share the wonderful voice and words being spoken here right now. Such passion and focused on the legalities of this inquiry.

Much to be proud of right now from your fellow citizens.

Thank you, Linda, for this minute by minute report of what is happening in #321. We are anxiously waiting for the final vote. Please keep us informed.
I was up there Sat. and saw the Hollzman video and delivered letters to various Dem. senators that are perceived to be undecided. Wish I could be there now for this important moment (I'm a teacher and live here in Tijeras). I am so grateful to you and to all those citizens who are speaking with such passion before the committee on this incredibly important issue.
Sincerely,
Ronnie Roberts

Currently we have Senator Adair addressing us and mispresenting what everyone said. Claiming we want impeachment for a difference of policy - HA!

ya da ya da ya. He's saying some pretty incredible things and accusations.

Hey Jodin: Thanks for all the great coverage you've been giving this story on the Impeach for Peace blog. We've been getting tons of hits from there over here.

Posted by: | Mar 5, 2007 8:53:39 PM

Hi Everybody. Thank you for filling in!!! WOOOOHOOOO!

I'm sorry, everyone was leaving the room quickly and I had to pack up and come home.

Ronnie, I didn't mean to be so abrupt upthread, They called for the vote while I was responding to you. We are going to have to find some sort of identifiers so we can find each other.

On Saturday I was wearing my "Still in Love with Howard Dean" Tshirt when Franster came over to introduce herself. I'm sorry I didn't meet you, but hopefully soon we will. Thank YOU for coming up.

Thank you all.

Now we have to find out when the full Seante Vote will be. I was originally told it happens within 48 hours, but I have to call Majority Leeader Sanchez tomorrow.

Later all, time to eat.

Linda, thanks for reporting in from the hearing room! I know how hectic that can get....

Posted by: | Mar 5, 2007 9:13:20 PM

What is the party situation in the New Mexico Senate? (# of Dems, Repubs, Independents, etc.). What are the odds, conventional wisdom-wise, of the resolution being sent to D.C.?

Posted by: Hissyspit | Mar 6, 2007 7:58:24 AM

Barb, no prob. If you ever have any impeachment news to get out there, feel free to drop us a line.

Posted by: | Mar 6, 2007 9:29:37 AM

Both the NM House and Senate are in the control of Democrats. I think it will be close but we have a good chance according to the bill's sponsors.

Posted by: barb | Mar 6, 2007 10:13:56 AM

I am so proud of New Mexico, and I thank all the people who pressed for this, and blogged on this.
GRACIAS!!!!!!!
We cannot stop now! Please,
EVERYONE who reads this great blog...contact the New Mexican Senators& all relevant lawmakers.
