RESOLUTION ON FULL EQUALITY FOR LGBT NEW MEXICANS

WHEREAS, New Mexico greatly benefits from ensuring the legitimacy and security of all it citizens;

WHEREAS, same-gender couples in New Mexico in committed, loving relationships are not currently permitted to take advantage of the full array of civil rights freely given to opposite-gender couples that have full civil rights;

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and several other countries in the international community of states have extended full civil rights to same-gender couples,

NOW THEREFORE;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Santa Fe County Central Committee supports executive, legislative, and judicial efforts to protect and bestow full civil rights to all the people of New Mexico including people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender;

toward that end

BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Santa Fe County Central Committee directs each and every legislator who is a member of the Democratic Party to vote against any and all legislation that seeks to reduce or destroy the civil rights of people in New Mexico who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender;

and

BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Santa Fe County Central Committee proclaims that inferior status laws-- such as domestic partnership or civil union legislation--are only separate-but-equal laws that are artificially manufactured to apply only to same-gender couples when opposite-sex couples enjoy the security of full civil rights,

and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Santa Fe County Central Committee recognizes that such separately manufactured laws generate feelings of inferior status in hearts and minds of same-gender couples in New Mexico in a way unlikely ever to be undone.*
