Rep. Martin Heinrich: I'm Running for U.S. Senate. This is Right Time, Right Thing to Do, Best Way to Advocate for NM
This morning Congressman Martin Heinrich (NM-01) released the video above announcing that he is entering the Democratic primary race for U.S. Senate in New Mexico. Rep. Heinrich, who won reelection to a second two-year term in the U.S. House this past November, says he is running because,
"This is the right time, and the right thing to do, and the best way to advocate for New Mexico. So, as of today, I'm officially a candidate for the United States Senate."
The video announcement was made simultaneously on Facebook, on Twitter, in an email message to supporters and on Rep. Heinrich's new campaign website. In addition, Congressman Heinrich will be talking to local media about his decision this morning at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque after he introduces legendary activist Dolores Huerta as an honored guest at the 18th Annual César Chávez Day March and Festival.
We like the idea of Martin announcing his candidacy first to friends and supporters, showing a real appreciation for the hard work of so many grassroots activists and ordinary citizens who helped make his victory in November a reality. It seems clear that his Senate campaign will take the same down-home, people-powered path Rep. Heinrich has become known for since his days on Albuquerque's City Council.
We think the video is a great start down that path, featuring Martin, Julie and the kids at home -- cooking and sitting down to a fajita meal -- and with Rep. Heinrich talking about what's on the minds of constituents, what he intends to continue fighting for and why he has decided to run. Don't miss the appearance of Grace -- a lovely chicken who just happens to be another member of the family.
As Rep. Heinrich says, we shouldn't balance the budget on the backs of teachers and firefighters or by cutting education. "When I think about my son Carter and the education he's getting in public school right now, that is the future of our economy and it's the future of our community."
"Growing up in a family where I saw first hand how hard people could work and still not always get a fair shake from the bigger economic issues, I'm looking forward to continuing my work to advocate for the people who get up every day and go to work and just do what good New Mexicans do to provide for their families."
Martin says he wants to keep on representing the folks he meets at the grocery store and when he picks up Carter to his public school. Us, in other words -- not the moneyed special interests that are making it so hard for hard-working Americans to live a decent life. And that path to a U.S. Senate seat starts today -- so he can do just that. Visit his campaign website now at http://martinheinrich.com/, and sign up to be a part of it. Rah!
Clever way to start his campaign. Love the video!

This will take work on the part of all of us. We have to hold this seat and Martin is a great choice for doing it. We also have to make sure we get a strong candidate to replace him in the first district. We have to keep it BLUE.

This is exciting but this run is dangerous too. We can't lose this Senate seat or the CD1 seat either! There will have to be strong outreach and unity in the party to get it done.
