2/25: Rally at Roundhouse for Health Care is a Human Right Amendment

From HealthRightNM:
HealthRightNM supports an amendment to Article 2 of the constitution of the State of New Mexico that would acknowledge that health care is a fundamental human right of all residents. State Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino has introduced a Senate Joint Resolution (SJR 5) to place such a constitutional amendment before the voters of our state. It reads as follows:

Health care is a fundamental right that is an essential safeguard of human life and dignity, and the state shall ensure that every resident is able to realize this right by establishing a comprehensive system of quality health care that is accessible to each resident on an equitable basis, regardless of ability to pay.

SJR 5 will be heard first in the Senate Rules Committee.

On Friday, February 25, which is Human Rights Day at the Capitol, HealthRightNM is hosting Rally on the Rails, a fun and interactive afternoon geared to gain support and momentum for the proposed amendment to make health care a human right in New Mexico. For more information and a schedule, check this flyer (pdf) and pass it on to others who may be interested in attending.

Participants will board the Rail Runner at the first stop in Belen and supporters will board the train at each subsequent stop. We will build numbers and momentum as we make our way north to the Capitol. The day’s events will culminate with a media conference and rally on the steps of the Roundhouse in Santa Fe.

We encourage you to contact your state senator and representative and ask them to support this amendment. To find your representatives call 505.986.4300 or visit the New Mexico Legislature website. Please let us know after you call by emailing HealthRightNM@gmail.com

HealthRightNM is also gathering signatures in support of this amendment to deliver to state lawmakers. Click here to add your name.
