Local Sierra Club Chapter Endorses Rep. Martin Heinrich
The Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club released a statement endorsing Rep. Martin Heinrich in the general election for U.S. House of Representatives in New Mexico's First Congressional District"
"Rep. Heinrich has been a strong and consistent supporter of and advocate for clean energy, green jobs and pro-conservation policies, including the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the Omnibus Public Lands Bill, and American Clean Energy and Security Act.
"Rep. Heinrich took the opportunity as President of the Freshman Democratic Congressional Class to urge other freshman Democrats not to back down on the American Clean Energy targets. Before running for Congress, Martin was an Albuquerque City Councilor and City Council President."
The Sierra Club is the nation's oldest and largest environmental volunteer organization, established in 1892, and with over 7,500 politically active members in New Mexico, the endorsement of the Rio Grande Chapter is widely sought by candidates for elected positions across the state. As the Chapter finalizes its endorsements for the general election they are posted on its new web site: http://nmsierraclub.org.

And on a local level, Martin Heinrich was instrumental in securing the Ojito Wilderness, a very beautiful area near San Ysidro. This is a great gift to our future generations.

I need some convincing before I pull the lever for Mr. Heinrich.
His stance on Afghanistan (more money, more occupation, no mission) seems like a path of least resistance--continue blindly supporting war and occupation because his party controls the White House.
Should I ignore Heinrich's terrible military votes and rubber stamp performance on the Armed Services Committee and just be thankful that he is OK on domestic policy?

Aren't anonymous posters great? M uses a Sierra Club endorsement piece to attack Martin Heinrich on military policy. Here's the way I see it. President Obama spent much of his first year re-evaluating our Afghanistan mission. He agreed to the military's request to increase the number of troops. But he also told them very clearly that they have until next summer to turn this around. This is very public knowledge, covered particularly well by Jonathan Alter and Newsweek, among others. So, I don't agree at all with M's talk of blindly supporting war and occupation. For the first time in ten years of the Afghan war, we now have clear direction and a timetable.
