NM-03: Wiviott First on the Air With Campaign Ads

How Do You Say This Man's Name?

Meet Don Wiviott

A Dem primary candidate in New Mexico's Third District, Don Wiviott is challenging the field by being first up with TV campaign ads. The TV spots are designed to introduce Don to those in the district who haven't yet had an opportunity to meet him in person. One of them uses a humorous approach centered on Wiviott's name. The ads also touch on some of his progressive campaign themes including ending the Iraq war, cleaning up the environment and improving health care and education.

“Don is running for Congress to make a difference in people's lives and to bring real change to Washington,” said Wiviott spokeswoman Caroline Buerkle. “We’re excited to take this next step in our campaign and to communicate with even more voters about how he will bring progressive leadership in the tradition of Tom Udall to Washington.”

Wiviott is out front in the fundraising department and it shows with this early ad purchase just weeks before the Dem Party's preprimary convention, set for March 15 at the Santa Ana Star Arena in Rio Rancho. The candidate has also been traveling the Third District to reach out to voters using a van, which you can see in one of the ads, that's powered by cooking oil from Santa Fe’s Flying Tortilla restaurant.

The other candidates in the NM-03 Dem primary are PRC member Ben R. Lujan, former Secretary of the NM Indian Affairs Department Benny Shendo Jr., Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya, Dixon attorney Rudy Martin and Santa Fe attorney Jon Adams.

Love the ads. Good to see some humor used! I also like that Wiviott is using biofuel for his campaign traveling.

I'm curious to know how a "progressive" like Wiviott could take $2K of Coors money:

So what are you saying? That Wiviott isn't a progrogressive? If you can say that you don't know him. By the way, how are the other candidates driving around the district? What vehicles are they using? Wiviott is using a vehicle using biofuel.

Commissioner Ben Ray Lujan drives an American made Hybrid car and carpools. :)

Some biofuels are a step in the right direction, but what we really need to address is consumption...if we increase efficiency but also increase consumption (which is what is happening) we're not necessarily any better off. Some biofuels, though, are a step in the wirng direction, particularly when the fuel uses out-compete the food-uses, which is what is happening with ethanol - driving up the cost of corn to the point where millions of people who rely on corn as their primary food source can now no longer afford it.

It all comes back to consumption. Very few politicians address this issue because nobody wants to be the doom-and-gloom candidate who says "reality check - we need to make some substantial local and national policy changes - but what we really need is personal lifestyle changes." Kiss of Death.

Jason is correct. I understand Wiviott uses cooking oil, not ethanol so that's good.

Nobody wants to tell voters that our whole way of living must change starting with consumerism, large homes and large vehicles. "Growth" is not good and neither is greed. We're talking major paradigm change here. It will become more apparent in the next couple years I'm sure.

Recycling, hybrids and solar won't help if the way we live doesn't change.

Bottom line is too many people if you ask me. Microbes will probably fix that if water shortages don't.

Wiviott's vaunted "biofuel bus" runs on 20% vegetable oil. Big deal. I get the same results gasing up at the Cerrillos Road biofuels station.

Like everything else Wiviott says about himself, this is misleading.

Do your homework, people. Wiviott is a corporate-backed greenwasher who uses his money to lie to the people while good progressive candidates who don't have $700,000 to spend are ignored by a supposedly progressive voting population here in Santa Fe.

Oh you mean like Ben Ray Lujan whose father is hosting a fundraiser for him with a large group of lobbyists for uranium mining and other special interests? Not very progressive is it?
